This week (May 2013) my doc let me borrow a high-tech gadget for vision training called the E.Y.E unit, or Eyeport Vision Trainng System.  It was produced by The Sharper Image a few years ago and is the same item that Dr. Jacob Liberman* sells on his http://www.exerciseyoureyes.com website for $239.95. It is patented and available through various other distributors as well, including Bernell**, who sells VT products to developmental optometrists.

UPDATE: As of Feb. 2020, *Dr. Liberman’s website is no longer active.**Bernell has it listed here for $299.95 on their website: https://www.bernell.com/product/JLEPV2/Brock-String-Devices#minicart_a. As of 2024, Bernell is no longer selling this unit.  They have a sample training schedule available here: https://s3.amazonaws.com/cdn.bernell.com/downloads/BRMJLEPV2-Weekly%20Schedule.pdf. This is not the complete manual which is included with purchase of the unit.)

The manual was missing so I went online and found it on Dr. Liberman’s website. There is a plan for 12 weeks of exercises, which take less than ten minutes a day. I admit it is pretty easy and quick. I did a little more today than the prescribed amount, testing out the various program settings. Now that I have the training schedule, I’ll be more focused in my efforts! Stay tuned for the update!

UPDATE: I still have it on my computer somewhere, but there are so few units available, it hasn’t been something I have needed to find for some time.  I had thought that it could be part of my regular regimen. I tried using the Eyeport unit for a while, but finally returned the unit to my doctor without achieving much in the way of improvement. Keep in mind this was before I had my strabismus surgery where my eyes were aligned, and I was able to do everything after that. I did not try the Eyeport unit when I did additional vision therapy after my surgery.

A study done by the Pacific University College of Optometry was reported in the Journal of the American Optometric Association where it was found to effect small improvement in college students with normal vision. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/6795040_A_prospective_study_of_the_EYEPORT_vision_training_system. It was authored by my friend Dr. Hannu Laukkanen (see podcast episode from January 29, 2025).

That was October 2006 and they indicated that studies were underway to determine its effectiveness in “symptomatic populations.” The  That would be me. I found another report that same year in the Journal for Behavioral Optometry that indicated improvement in function for police recruits.

I found no follow-up studies specific to my situation, but it was also available through the Optometric Extension Program Foundation. As of 2025, it is not available through OEPF.  I figure that if it were going to be discredited, there has been ample time for that.

The original website for Dr. Lieberman, http://www.exerciseyoureyes.com (no longer active) gives this clear definition of the way it works:

eyeport_diag.jpg (341×143)

It’s Really Simple
How the Eyeport Vision Training System works is really quite simple. Your eyes’ focusing muscles flex and relax when they follow the EYEPORT’s programmed series of alternating red and blue lights. Because the lights turn on in different directions, patterns and speeds, your eyes exercise through their full range of motion—horizontally, vertically, diagonally, near, and far. And you don’t even work up a sweat.

Since you often focus at close range while reading or working at a computer, your focusing system becomes stiff and cramped causing computer eye strain. Limbering up your eyes as part of a daily routine will retrain them to work the way they’re supposed to…and you’ll be well on your way to improving your visual performance. All you have to do is commit to a daily 10-minute workout to see results.

And It’s Patented
What makes the EYEPORT unique is its patented use of alternating red and blue lights. This makes it possible to achieve dramatic results, faster and more efficiently than with any other vision exercise product available today.

“Using the EYEPORT is like opening up a new world. My eyes feel stronger, more active and more alert. There’s more to see and interact with. It makes me a more efficient athlete and has made me more comfortable and relaxed in a broad range of activities. I was amazed at the way it changed my life.”Rick Chetnever, Kula, HI

Basically, your eyes react differently to red and blue lights due to a scientific phenomenon called chromatic aberration. The focusing system contracts when it sees red and relaxes looking at blue. By combining eye exercises with specific colored lights, the EYEPORTstrengthens your vision skills in a revolutionary new way never previously done. And it’s easy.

Too bad it’s not available anyore.

The Eyeport is a great device to keep your eyes sharp. I have worn glasses for over 35 year and still do not need bifocals.
So today I wanted to set up the device and run through a few visual exercises BUT, even though I put in fresh batteries, it would not turn on. ANY HELP, ANYONE?

    1. healingmysight Avatar

I changed the batteries in the one I borrowed from my doctor and it worked, so I don’t know what the problem would be with your device. Maybe you could double check the batteries and/or the cover clicking back on securely.

Although your posts are 4+ years old, I’m still asking: my unit’s DVD isn’t working. I would gladly pay anyone to duplicate theirs and send it to me.

I don’t recall having a DVD with the unit I borrowed from my doctor. I have returned it to him since I am no longer in vision therapy. I still have the manual I found free online if that would be helpful to you.

The Eyeport II is now available at http://www.bernell.com. It is an updated version of the original with all of the same programs and speeds. It can be seen at http://www.bernell.com/product/JLEP/Home-VT

Hello! I know this is an old discussion, but please let me know if you still have the manual to describe how to do the eye exercises! We just got the Sharper Image EYE System, but we don’t have the detailed instructions. Let me know, thanks! 🙂 Krista

I lost my leg attachment. Can I purchase another one?
    Thanks,

    1. healingmysight Avatar

You would have to contact the manufacturer regarding that question. I just used the unit I borrowed from my VT doctor.

    Hi there,

Can I have the manual too. I don’t know how to get a hold of my device but I’d love to use this on my son and daughter and family. My eye have been going down the tubes for a while. Adr41@hotmail.com. I looked at the Bernal website so you know where I can purchase one privately or through a vision expert?

    1. healingmysight Avatar

      Hi Adriana,
My understanding is that you will need to get the unit from your vision care provider. I recommend you be evaluated by a developmental optometrist and see what is recommended. The manual won’t do you much good without the device.

I have been using the Eyeport for ~20 years and when my old one started to fail (seemed to be an electrical problem) I bought the newer version.

It’s been well worth the price… although it’s always been a struggle to do it regularly:

It’s surprisingly hard to set aside ~10 minutes a day to do the training.

I’ve always thought the EyePort could be significantly simplified and cost reduced to make it easier to use and cheaper to purchase. Instead it seems to have gone out of production once again.

When using the EyePort the muscles in your eyes feel like they’ve just been exercised hard.

After training you notice that your sight has improved i.e. If you’re farsighted your near vision improves… or visa versa.

The EyePort is the only eye training device with any research demonstrating benefits… so you buy any alternative at your peril. I don’t doubt that some alternatives work… but also suspect that the EyePort works better than cheaper equipment.

Jacob Lieberman (the inventor) is the only one with videos online explaining how the device works.

Trading $$$ for better eyesight is a no-brainer.

    I’m 61 and still don’t have glasses.

    I love my EyePort.

    🙂

When I went to the COVD (now OVDRA) conference, I talked to the people at Bernell, (who were manufacturing it) and they indicated that the demand for the device wasn’t there, so there was not any economic incentive to continue to produce it. I would guess that someone would need to design a new simplified, more economical device and have a great promotion plan in order to make it widely available.

By the time I got my EyePort into Australia it cost almost $600 AUD… which is significant.

If I didn’t know how well it worked I would have had trouble justifying the price.

It’s still cheaper than glasses or eye surgery… so I’m happy to pay.

My friend Roland just tried to buy one but can’t find one… plus he was put off by the price.

Even if it’s a slow seller I’m surprised that Bernell doesn’t do a batch of them and sell them off slowly.

I’ve tried most other methods of eye training… and the EyePort works better than anything else.

BTW: Do you happen to have full list of references showing the EyePort works?

I found a few journal articles on the net… but Jacob seems to be referring to a few that I don’t seem to have.

    🙂

    1. healingmysight Avatar

It seems it wasn’t cost effective to even do a batch to sell slowly. I am glad you have found it effective. I have not done extensive research on it, so unfortunately I do not have the articles you are referencing.
